So it’s time for your very first driving lesson. You’re probably feeling a few nerves, which is absolutely okay. Most people do when they first sit behind the wheel of the car and they tend to dissipate as the lesson goes on and you start to feel more comfortable.
So now you’re behind the wheel for the first time and you need to start the engine. Your driving instructor will have gone over the steps you need to take before you do this, but here we thought we’d offer a little reminder for the next time you get behind the wheel.
Put Your Seatbelt On
This should always be the very first thing you do when you get into a car. Pop your belt on and make sure there are no twists in the cord, as they can compromise the integrity of the belt and even make it less safe.
Check The Gear
The car should be in neutral gear before you start the engine, so make sure to check every time. If it isn’t, place it back into neutral and then go through the rest of your checks.
Your Seat
You will likely need to adjust the seat to suit your ideal driving style, especially if your driving instructor is a different size to you. Comfort isn’t the only factor here, as proper seat positioning is crucial to your safety. There are three things you need to check.
Distance From Pedals – The seat will have a lever, usually located under the front, that can be used to slide backward and forward. Adjust the seat until you are able to depress the pedals fully, without being so close that your knees are bent into your body when driving.
Seat Height – The seat also has a level to adjust the height, usually located on the side of the seat. Use this to give yourself a full view out of the front window, in addition to ensuring your arms can comfortable turn the steering wheel.
Adjust the Head Rest – This is the step that is most commonly missed. Your head rest should be adjusted so the top is approximately level to the top of your head. This offers protection against whiplash and other neck injuries if you are involved in an accident.
Your Mirrors
Now that you are comfortable, you are almost ready to pull off. However, before you start the engine and go into your “mirror, signal, manoeuvre” routine, you need to check that all of the mirrors are in the right position.
Passenger Side Mirror – You should be able part of the road and part of the side of the car in this mirror. Also check the smaller mirror inside to ensure it offers a clear view of the back wheel, as this is essential for reversing around corners.
The Front Mirror – This is nice and simple. You should be able to use the front mirror to see through the entire back window of the car. If you can’t, make some adjustments.
Driver’s Side Mirror – You should be able to see much more of the road in this mirror than the passenger one, with just a small part of the car creeping into view as well.
The Final Word
With everything in place you’re ready to start the engine. Now you just need to make sure you conduct the proper mirror checks and signals before you pull away from the curb.
