Finally passing your driving test is an amazing feeling. You will now have the freedom to get your own car and get out on the road completely unsupervised. It is exceptionally freeing and we don’t want to dampen that excitement, however, it is important to remember that you are still a novice and that a lot of your learning is going to happen after you have completed the test.
With that in mind, here’s some advice on how to carry yourself after you have completed your driving test and have gotten out on the road with your own car.
Avoid Giving Lifts At First
A lot of your friends are going to be excited for you and, let’s face it, are also going to want you to give them lifts here, there and everywhere. We advise against this during the first few weeks, as you are going to need to spend some time on your own so you can build familiarity with your car and become comfortable while driving without having somebody to supervise every move you make. Once you reach that point you can start driving with friends, just make sure you stay in control of the car at all times.
Consider Getting P Plates
If you still feel a little nervous when driving you should do what you can to make people aware that you have only recently passed your test and you are still getting to grips with doing it unsupervised. The best way to do this is invest in some P plates. These will show other road users that you are fairly new to the road, which will hopefully mean they give you a little more leeway while you are learning the ropes.
Ditch The Distractions
It is unlikely that you will have been driving with the radio blaring when you were taking lessons. Again, your aim during the first couple of weeks will be to get comfortable and you may not be able to do this when you have the constant chatter and music of the radio in the background. As for mobile phones, turn them off and put them away. Driving will distracted is a leading cause of accidents.
Consider Pass Plus
While your driving lessons will have taught you a lot, there is still some more training you can do if you don’t feel completely ready. Pass Plus is ideal for those who want to build more experience of driving at night or need to get to grips with the motorway.
Get Out There And Drive
Of course, the best advice we can offer is for you to get out there and drive. Passing your test is great and you don’t want to let the skills you have developed go to waste, so take every opportunity that you have to drive more often. You should find yourself becoming more confident each time you take to the road and over time you will build on your initial base of skills.
